This seminar will explore the relationship between the liberal arts and civic engagement. We will ask: What is the point of promoting civic engagement on a liberal arts campus? Are there irreconcilable tensions between civic engagement and the liberal arts? Have civic engagement practices in higher education become so institutionalized that we fail to think critically about why we do this work? How do calls for “civil discourse” and “civility” inform practices of civic engagement in higher education?
